It doesn't get any funnier than this! This is where we had lunch - solely for the name!

Do you think they built this house and got to the top before they realised that they'd forgotten to put windows in?

Trees - They Are A Changin'

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

We've arrived in this area just in time to see the leaves change colours. It hasn't fully happened yet because it hasn't been cold enough, but if you keep your eyes peeled....... you come across the odd gorgeous one.

Louis Comfort Tiffany

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

In the back streets of Bar Harbor there is a little church that holds 10 original Tiffany stained glass windows. He used a method of layering the coloured glass to produce the colours making it look more like a painting. I thought they were just going to be like any other stained glass window, but I were wrong! They were absolutely beautiful - quite mesmorising.

This one we thought looked like the actor, Chris Elliott - you know the stalkery one from There's Something About Mary?

Paul Newman's in Town

photo.JPG by Shellenski

Paul Newman's daughter, Nell went to uni in Bar Harbor and Paul used to go and visit her. This is the B&B he would stay in whilst he was in town.

She could have told us anything, but this seems an odd lie to tell, so we'll believe her.

Our Victorian Stroll

This Victoriany dressed lady took us on a stroll around the streets of Bar Harbor and regaled us with stories of Martha Stewart and the Rockafellas.

This was a restaurant on the pier.

The Sand Bar

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

This sand bar is the reason that Bar Harbor got it's name. In high tide the water is about 10 feet deep and low tide you can walk across to the island.

Because of the low tides the big ships can't come right into the harbor and so we got to use the tender boats.

I'll probably recreate this one at home.

The staff are all so clever, not only do they do towel folding in the shapes of animals, but they do fruit carving as well and it was extraordinary!

Sweet!

This is just one portion of it - it went around the whole pool deck!

Dessert Extravaganza

That's right, you read that correctly. The ship had a dessert extravaganza..... oh my heavens, you should have seen the yumminess that was there....... tell you what, I'll show you through the power of the camera!

Oh Canada

Halifax was our last Canadian port on this trip as the next port - Bar Harbor is in Maine, USA. So we decided to have a little drink to say goodbye and thank you to Canada.

"Peggy of the Cove" by Ivan Fraser

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

This introverted fellow is Ivan Fraser, author or the book Peggy of the Cove. A story about an orphaned girl who goes to live with an older couple after being ship wrecked at the cove. (does this storyline have a somewhat familiar ring to it?)

How cool is his house?

The Most Famous Lighthouse - Ever

photo.JPG by Shellenski

Does it look familiar?

It was actually really pretty up there. This area around Halifax had about 300 lighthouses and have just recently decommissioned 160 of them. A local man bought this one and is now responsible for it's upkeep. He had it painted just in time for our visit.

Thank you

Don't Rock The Boat

There were lots of little gems like this all around the little cove.

Peggy's Cove

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

This is the little cove, and the legend has it that there was a woman who used to live there named Margaret and that the cove was named after her nickname, Peggy..... or it could have been that the water way ran into Margaret's Bay...... or that a fisherman had to leave his love behind in Ireland and her name was Peggy and he wanted to name the cove after her.....

Nobody really knows why it's called Peggy's Cove, but it's a sweet little village with a whopping great lighthouse and if it wasn't for the massive gift shop on the point, it would have fallen to rack and ruin many years ago!

THURSDAY

Next stop - Halifax. Tour: To Peggy's Cove. It has one of the most famous and most photographed lighthouses in the world. They obviously don't know about the Geraldton lighthouse!

Conversations

1.
Lady: Isn't that a big boat Reg?
Man: Yeah, it is a big boat.
Lady: Isn't though Reg, isn't though?

Why do Americans talk like this?

2.
Man: We could get them a place mat that has Quebec written on it?
Lady: What?  Look, I can understand getting souvenirs for yourself but why would anyone want a souvenir with a place name of a place that someone else went on their vacation that they haven't been to?

Fair comment.

3.
Lady: I ain't walkin' up those stairs George.......... and neither are you!

4.
We walked really slowly behind an elderly couple along a narrow path from the ship to the security gate.  We couldn't get past them and they didn't know we were behind them.  Then they stood in the middle of the security gate so we couldn't get past and asked the guard how they could get to the top of the hill to the castle.

Guard: Well, there are 3 ways to get to the top.  You could walk up the steps.  There are about 200.  Or you could walk around the walls around the city or you could catch the funicular....... I think he could have probably left out the first two!  Did he not see them hobble to the gate?

Until he swung the driver's cabin around and drove down the embankment - trying to straighten her up. This left the the trailer digging into the ground and the wheels spinning, so he couldn't reverse........ uh oh!

This poor driver had lots of helpers and a bus load of spectators and it just wasn't working..... we watched for about 20 minutes or so and then had to get all the cars behind us to back up and move out and we did the same. It meant that our trip back wasn't as scenic, but we just made it back to the ship - so good news for us...... maybe not so good news for this driver.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

We were about an hour away from the ship and needed to be back on board in about an hour and 15 minutes before she sailed to the next port and this is what we came across. This guy had been backing and filling this huge house into this very thin driveway for a while it seemed. We sat and watched him for a while thinking that he nearly had it.

Where would we be without Sir Dr Alexander Graham Bell?

You Can Ring My Bell....el....el, RIng My Bell.

photo.JPG by Shellenski
photo.JPG, a photo by Shellenski on Flickr.

This was Alexander and Mabel's property. It overlooks the section of the lake where he would try out his hydrofoil experiments and where he set a speed record moving across the water.

He also invented the air conditioner; the kite; the graphaphone. He also worked with deaf children and taught them a way to read and speak using his father's invention and started schools for the deaf and trained teachers to use his method..... then in his spare time he founded the National Geographic Society.

There is a museum in the town with all the artifacts being donated by his grand children, some of who still live on the property. Alex told them that they could all build houses on the property and live there forever, as long as they didn't build mansions.

Give Me A Bell

An Alexander Graham Bell that is......

Our next stop was a little town called Baddock which is where Mr Bell had a summer house, right there on the lakes. This is a statue of Alex and his wife, Mabel, who was deaf, and was at one time one of AGB's pupils. They are looking out over the lake to their estate.

We knew that AG invented the telephone, but we didn't realise that he had so many fingers in so many other pies. What an amazing fellow.

The Making of The Doilies

I find that you can never have too many doilies, especially these days. This lady was sitting in one of the display museum houses making her doilies and had some on display. It's a lost art, except in nursing homes and at church fates.
